Georgia House Speaker Ralston to be chamber banquet keynote speaker

Tickets are now on sale for the Dalton-Whitfield Chamber of Commerce’s 70th Annual Banquet featuring Georgia House Speaker David Ralston.

The banquet will be on Monday, Sept. 13, at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center. A reception begins at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 6:30. The cost per person is $60 for chamber members and $75 for non-members. Corporate tables of 10 are available for purchase.

The ticket deadline is Sept. 3 and reservations can be made by calling the chamber at (706) 278-7373.

The chamber will feature program year accomplishments and recognize outgoing Chairman of the Board David Gregg (Alliance National Bank). Included will be the “passing of the gavel” from Gregg to incoming Chairman Lynn Laughter (Laughter & Jones Financial Management).  

Ralston was born in Ellijay, where he graduated from Gilmer County High School. He attended North Georgia College and State University, earning a bachelor’s degree, and later received a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law.

In 1992, Ralston was elected to the state Senate, serving until 1998 when he won the Republican nomination for attorney general of Georgia.  In 2002, Ralston was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives to serve the citizens of the 7th District, which includes the counties of Fannin and Gilmer and part of Dawson.

As a member of the House Ralston has served on the following committees: Appropriations, Rules, Transportation, Governmental Affairs, Judiciary (vice chair) and Judiciary Non-Civil (chair).

On Jan. 11, 2010, Ralston was elected speaker of the House. Aside from his legislative duties, he is an attorney in Blue Ridge. His civic duties include participation with the Fannin County Chamber of Commerce, Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association and the Blue Ridge Lions Club.
