DALTON —
Watts Dantzler followed his heart.
Dantzler, Dalton High’s 6-foot-8-inch offensive tackle and two-time Daily Citizen All-Area Football Team selection, said Sunday he will sign with the University of Georgia in February, ending a years-long recruiting process that included nearly 30 scholarship offers from colleges across the country.
The big lineman, who received offers from all 12 Southeastern Conference schools, chose the Bulldogs over the Auburn Tigers. Those are the same two teams his father, Danny Dantzler, narrowed his choices to in the early 1970s. The elder Dantzler, who lettered at Georgia from 1971-73 as an offensive lineman, died in February 2009 after a three-year battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Watts Dantzler chose Sunday, Father’s Day, to make his choice public as a way to honor his father, one of the most respected men in the Dalton community and who served as an inspiration to many during his fight with ALS.
