ROME — Berry College recently welcomed 20 teams for its fall 2008 seventh-and-eighth-grade math competition. The event is meant to promote and encourage mathematical excellence in area students.
The top three teams, in order, were Rome Middle School, Tattnall Square Academy in Macon and Heritage Middle School in Ringgold. The top individual winners, in order, were William Jackson from Tattnall Square Academy, Chandler Rawls from Ringgold Middle School and Phillip Spratling from Rome Middle School.
Participating schools included Clear Creek Middle School (Gilmer County), Coosa Middle School, Dade Middle School, First Presbyterian Day School (Macon), Gilmer Middle School, Gladden Middle School (Murray County), Heritage Middle School, Jasper Middle School, LaFayette Middle School, Lakeview Middle School (Catoosa County), Lyerly Middle School, Menlo Elementary School, New Hope Middle School (Whitfield County), Pickens County Middle School, Ringgold Middle School, Rockmart Middle School, Rome Middle School, St. Mary’s School of Rome, Sonoraville Middle School and Tattnall Square Academy.
Michael Ballew, a senior mathematics major and the son of Mike and Sherri Ballew of Jasper, Ga., served as announcer for the event. Martha Tapia, associate professor of mathematics education, was the faculty coordinator.
