Carpet Capital Color-sun.jpg

In this Aug. 22, 2012 photo, an American flag is reflected in the entrance of a closed carpet store along the Interstate 75 corridor of carpet businesses in Dalton, Ga. Collapsing industry or not, Dalton city officials are still the proud owners of the label Carpet Capital of the World, but what they arent happy about is the most recent label: The city that is leading the nation in the number of job losses per capita this year. The city that makes nearly 75 percent of the nations flooring has lost 4,600 jobs between June 2011 and June 2012 according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Daltons economy hit bottom in 2009 with the collapse of the housing market, taking hundreds of distributor business and support services down with it and struggling to recover in recent years.
