— Northwest Whitfield’s girls basketball team will play for a state championship.
Spurred by a 27-point effort from senior guard Jordi Cook, the Lady Bruins beat Dutchtown 75-56 in the Georgia High School Association’s Class 4A state tournament semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth.
Northwest (29-3), which is making its first appearance in a state title game since 1990, will face either Forest Park or Southwest DeKalb at 3 p.m. Friday in Duluth. Those two teams were playing in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The Lady Bruins were upset in the semifinals of the Region 7-4A tournament last month by Hillgrove, but have shaken off that defeat to win five games in a row — they’ve also won 28 of their past 29 games — and secure their spot in the championship game.
